20 Weight Gain Shake Recipes

When you are on a weight gain diet a good way to consume more calories is to drink weight gain shakes. If each weight gain shake was approximately 750 calories, if you drink 2 shakes per day that’s an extra 1500 calories or so that you are consuming in your diet.

I don’t like to think of liquid meals as a substitute for eating normal food. They should be used in addition to eating the normal 5-6 other meals you have in the day, which makes the time that you consume the weight gain shakes very important. I like to drink a shake after breakfast so you don’t feel too full for the rest of the day, as well as post workout when the muscles really need the nutrients.

I always choose Optimum Nutrition protein powder which comes in different flavors. I like Optimum Nutrition because I find it to be the best quality whey protein for the price, but feel free to use your favorite brand of whey protein.

To make the weight gain shakes all you will need is a blender, ice and a few easy to get supplements. You can also add some sugar or artificial sweetener to the shakes to make them taste a bit better.

Thank you for the weight gain shake recipes. What is the measurement of the scoop used in the recipes?

David August 19, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Hi Ruthie, The serving size for 1 rounded scoop is a little over one ounce (29.4 grams). Each scoop has about 24 grams of protein. Hope this helps!

Hello! I have a question. If you have a high metabolism will these protein shakes effect your weight gaining? Like will it be better then lifting weights?

Unathi September 25, 2009 at 5:28 am

Good-day
I’m in South Africa and I’ve been very thin for all my life. Now I want to try these shakes so as to gain weight, I’m not sure where I can get the protein powders so I was wondering if you can recommend any other recipies that will not contain the protein powder.

Thank you

South Carolina mommy here. My son is a li’l lightweight and I’m trying to put some HEALTHY weight on him! I’m not sure how effective this is, since I’ve only been doing this for about a month.

I like to use dry milk in whole milk; mixing it according to package directions but milk rather than water.
I add Stevia or honey to sweeten the shakes.

Frozen banana, or any frozen fruit, adds flavor, calories, color and will thicken… more frozen food, the thicker and colder the shake will be.

Raw egg, as in a twist on Egg Nog… Check for freshness before adding to the blender. Crack them into a clear measuring cup to inspect. If the yolk is round and hold it’s shape, rather than flattening out, it’s still fresh. Or, before even cracking – if it floats in water, pitch it!

It makes for a buttery-yellow color and rich flavor… I add 4 eggs for every 2 cups of “enriched” milk.

I puree everything, so there’s no chunks, or weird textures, to trigger a gag reflex. Never thought of using cooked oatmeal – I’m gonna try it. When I cook my oatmeal, to retain as many nutrients as possible, I don’t actually “cook” it.

For a cup of “cooked” oatmeal, I measure 1/2 oats into a bowl and add a cup of boiling water & let it sit until cool enough to eat. The oats have soaked up the water and are tender w/o cooking it to death- literally.

I’ve read coconut oil is excellent for so many things, including shakes/smoothies, but haven’t yet tried it (yet)… it can be pricey and you have to be careful about how it’s processed/handled prior to purchase. Not all coconut oils are equal and there’s no nutritional value to a poorly made product. So, do your homework before buying… but that goes w/o saying for anything, right?? :o)

Daniel Thelander January 4, 2010 at 9:17 am

hello, i have question about the oatmeal, should you boil it first then mix it with the other ingredients? later after i boiled the oatmeal and then grind it?

Ian March 25, 2010 at 2:24 am

I just wanted to sincerely thank you. I am allergic to corn, which is is in EVERYTHING, including over-the-counter weight gainers. So having a website that lists all ingredients that I can have is truly a blessing.

dan April 15, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Last year I was using a weight gainer called N Large 2 but after loosing my job I stopped buying it but 2 weeks ago I started training again and have tried my own homemade gainer, I never knew if it would work and I didn’t read it from anywhere.

I use,
3 scoops of ice cream,
1 banana,
400ml of milk,
then blend it all together

It ain’t the best homemade shake but since I tried it because it is so simple and cheap to make and I would recommend it to thin people like myself that are trying to gain weight for the first time. I train every other day and drink this gainer straight after a workout. I have gained 9 pounds and only be using it for 2 weeks.

Give it a try, Its really simple and cheap to make

googleccd April 20, 2010 at 4:14 pm

is the 6th recipe affective as the rest ?

justcurious May 5, 2010 at 6:55 pm

To Dan, what type of workout are you doing and do you only drink the shake once a day or twice a day? Do you know how many calories are combined?

jason May 6, 2010 at 4:32 pm

When ever i make shakes I use food such as yogurts, peanut butter, bananas, milk, oj, oatmeal. I tend to use it after a work out meal, because it has a lot of fat content. 3 cups milk, one cup oatmeal, one banana, i use 2-3 tbl spoon of peanut butter and one cup of oj. You and put whey protein if you like (but i think that would be too much protein). I calculated my shakes around 1234.

dan May 13, 2010 at 5:31 pm

To Justcurious, I use these once a day, straight after training on the days im training and on the days im not i would take one about 3pm. between lunch and dinner. Also since ive started using these shakes I drink a 500ml milkshake in between breakfast and lunch. (Just milk with a flavour powder) The workout im doing with this aint the biggest of workouts. I use to do mainly weight lifting when i was using N LARGE 2 but now im working mainly on uper body, curling, bench press, butter fly etc. I have set myself a program which i dont completely tire myself out with and still lasts about an hour. The shake is really refreshing aswell as its quite cool and after a work out it is just great and tastes awesome.

Chuck May 28, 2010 at 4:01 pm

@ dan..is there anything you can sub the banana out for??

Taurus June 17, 2010 at 7:52 pm

How many glasses a day do you have to drink a shake before you see results?

nikita June 29, 2010 at 5:44 am

chuck, you can substitute the banana with any other fruit. it wont make a difference and it will still work the same. just a different taste. i use pear instead and sometimes i put mango in.

bella June 29, 2010 at 1:53 pm

what type of protein shakes r u talking about @dan, is whey, casein, soy or banana? and will it be any good for a lady like me cos I am 20 yrs old and does it matter i have to go for a workout?

tabitha July 10, 2010 at 2:50 pm

i chose to do recipe #6, does anyone know how effective this is if anyone has tried it because my doctors say that i’m underweight.. i’m 5’6 and 103 pounds and i just want to know if this will work considering how much of a picky eater i am.. please help

Kevin August 2, 2010 at 7:42 pm

In regard to the shakes listed above for weight gain, does anyone know the rough calorie count they may have?

Thanks Kevin

David August 3, 2010 at 12:53 am

@Kevin – It will vary depending on the type of protein powder, the size of the banana, the type of milk you use, etc. For example purposes, if you were to use low-fat 2% milk, the #15 weight gain shake will contain about 900 calories.

Kevin August 3, 2010 at 9:23 am

Im interested in shake#12.

What would be the rough calorie count for that shake?

Thanks for your earlier reply!

Kevin

David August 3, 2010 at 9:36 am

@Kevin – You would be looking at about 850 calories with shake #12. Again, this is assuming you are using 2% milk.

Raquel August 3, 2010 at 10:05 am

Hey,

I am living in south africa & would like to find out what brand shakes can I use to gain weight. I have always been small and am tired of going to the petite section in the clothing stores.

I have had a baby & he’s already 2yrs now & I’ve gone right back to my body weight as before the pregnancy. I’m very active at work & home, so I do have a fast metabolic system.

Please give me some sound advice. I would really like to impress my husband.

Raquel

Jazz September 3, 2010 at 4:01 am

wondering if i need to work out after using these shakes???

Tom September 4, 2010 at 2:31 am

How many calories does #9 contain?

David September 4, 2010 at 6:12 am

@Tom – You would be looking at about 500 calories with shake #9 (less if no dextrose) .

@Jazz – In addition to consuming weight gain shakes pre/post workout you would want to work out. Here is a weight training programs guide you may find useful.

Justin September 14, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Anyone got a rough calorie count on recipe #3 with whole milk?

Jennifer Poe September 30, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Does anyone know how many calories are in Shake #5? That is the one I would like to start making. I have to consume 1,713 calories a day to reach my goal.

Tim October 15, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Some of these shake recipes call for egg whites. Are you suggesting putting uncooked eggs into the shakes? I understand that uncooked eggs can give you salmonella poisoning.

Ogieva Roland Aghamioghogho October 20, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Thanks for your recommendations. I am from Nigeria and i look for the ingredients and prepare it. How long will it takes for me to use it before i gain weight.

Waqas October 21, 2010 at 5:57 pm

I use

half liter Milk

Use it if you are doing some heavy weight exercises

Natalie Carver November 1, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Hi, I’m Natalie, 18 from Peterborough, iv been having trouble trying to gain weight because I have quite a few illnesses like; crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, osteoporosis, IBS and so on… Some days I am unable to eat anything and when I do eat I either end up with runny stools or constipation, I have talked to my dietician about this and have tried so many supplements, in the end I was told ‘its trial and error’ from now on, I am 5ft 3in and weigh around 7 stone, I’m a skinny size 6 and hating it, not only that I’m reminded of it everywhere I go, by doctors and family and friends, even when I go clothes shopping I can never find anything that properly fits my skinny frame. I also can’t afford to keep buying different supplements as my doctor don’t want me to work yet I can’t claim disability, so would be truely greatful if you could recomend anything that can help me without making me feel bloated because of the amount or giving me the runs/constipation. And can u suggest anything that I could have instead of a meal if I am unable to eat? can u also tell me how many calories , what u suggest, has if I use full fat milk and how many I should be having per day, thank u .xXxNataliexXx.

Giovanni November 21, 2010 at 6:13 am

Dan, how many calories are in your shake?

Tom December 3, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Here is my favorite that I came up with
Fat
1Tbspn Udo’s Choice Omega 3-6-9 blend
2 Tbspn H Cream 35%

Protein
3 Scoops protein powder

Carbs
1 banana and 1 cup frozen berry
Quaker instant oatmeal with 125 ml milk- I like the maple one and it is the most calorie dense
500 ml 1% m 24 carb, 18 protein

optional 28 grams of sugar

I find the ratio better without sugar but when i have a sweet craving I add the sugar so here is the approx calorie count and ratios

Total 1125 Cal or 1233 Cal
Fat= 276 Cal 24.5% or 22.3%
Protein= 400 Cal 35.5% or 32.5%
Carbs= 449 or 557 Cal 40% or 45.2%

I generally drink 2 a day over 4 sittings so 4×560 calorie meals + 3 solid meals (breakfast lunch supper). An easy and tasty way to get 4000+ Cal every day. I work a 12 hour night shift (1800-0600) 3 times a week and even with my sleep cycle so messed up as long as i keep hitting the gym I can gain good mass.

Chantalle March 23, 2011 at 10:33 am

Hi, I meed some help gaining weight! I am currently breast feeding but I am not taking in enough calories and I need to gain weight also. What shakes would he the healthiest but loaded with calories that I can take? And what powder should i use? btw, I’m aloud to drink protein powders.

Big Ez April 5, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Chantalle,

Take:

1 cup of oats = 360 cal.
1/3 cup almonds = 310 cal.
1 banana = 100 cal.
16 oz. water = no calories

now this shake is 770 calories w/o any protein powders even added yet. It contains approx. 27 grams of protein. If you add 1 cup of milk you are adding approximately 120 calories. If you add a regular serving of whey protein powder (there are so many kinds) you are adding approximately 120 calories.

Taking this twice a day will pack on the pounds. And try to eat every 2-3 hours.

IF you’re hungry. . . its time to eat
If its before bed. . . its time to eat
If you ate 2-3 hour go . . . its time to eat
If you’re not even hungry but not totally full. . . its time to eat

I hope all of you hard gainers can learn something from this.

Sincerely,

L.F.A (Legs For Arms)

7mL lime extract

Brent Sopel April 15, 2011 at 11:50 am

DJ TROUT.

Thank you SO much on your amazing DJ TROUT RUCKUS Shake Recipe.

My doctor has tried proscribing me with supplements, but nothing has come close to the effects that your shake has had on my life. I used to be 6 foot 2, 180 pounds but you have helped me gain twenty five pounds of pure muscle. The ladies notice me everywhere I go and I owe it to all to you!
The Oak Bark really adds great texture to the shake which makes it delicious as well.

Thank you, and God bless

michael April 16, 2011 at 12:26 am

hi, i love these recipes but i’d really like to know if whey protein isolate would also work because all isolate descriptions focus on the purity of the product and i was thinking if i add all this to my shake will it hinder the absorptivity of the whey isolate?

Big Ez April 18, 2011 at 1:46 pm

lol @ the trout recipe

DJ TROUT April 18, 2011 at 6:45 pm

DJ TROUT PROTEIN SHAKE 2

Brent Sopel, I am not surprised at your weight gain. I have used these shakes for two years now and gained 23.5 trouts. I have many more recipes if you want them. Also, Big Ez, you might want to try my shakes, you will be thrilled with the results.

Brian Scalabrine April 18, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Thank you so much DJ Trout! I am 6 foot 9, 235 pounds. I am very skinny, but I have started drinking your shakes and have gained 5 pounds of muscle in a week! You are a genius! I also find that adding a little bit of ginger to your shakes make them even more delicious! The players on my basketball team used to make fun of me for being skinny, but now they won’t, so they will make fun of me for something else. Also Michael, yes, adding whey protein isolate to your shake will hinder the absorptivity of the whey isolate. I find adding trout to my shakes is much better and gives it a slippery texture. Thanks again DJ Trout.
