Weight gain isn’t something that is easy to do, it requires patience and discipline to diet and training. Hopefully the weight gain tips on this site will help you to achieve your goals.
One of the best weight gain tips to remember is DO EVERYTHING BIG! That means eat BIG and lift BIG to get BIG. Say that over and over again in your head until you fully understand it. Many people think weightlifting is the key to gaining weight. Of course weightlifting is an extremely important part. However to gain weight, think beyond weightlifting! Your diet is just as important when it comes to gaining weight.
Weight Gain Tip No 1 – Get Counting
Count your calories on a normal daily basis. That doesn’t mean you have to change your normal eating habits – just eat as you normally would and count the calories you have consumed. This is of crucial importance to try to be as accurate as possible. Then get on the scales and weigh yourself.
Weight Gain Tip No 2 – Get Eating!
Eating is first and foremost the most important thing you need for proper weight gain. It makes sense that you need to eat more calories than you burn. This does not mean eating anything and everything within reach! It means you need to include in your weight gain diet, foods that will help you gain lean mass, not bad fats. 6 meals a day is a good start. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three other small meals at regular intervals throughout the day. Make it your goal to eat every 2.5 to 3 hours. Remember the principal weight gain tip is to get BIG, you have to eat BIG!
Steak, chicken, fruit, milk, vegetables, cheese and assorted types of nuts are the foods to feast on. Eat 4 – 6 pieces of fresh fruit a day, and at least four tall glasses of milk. Low fat milk is a great, cheap protein source – take advantage of it. A sample snack meal would be a glass of milk, an apple, and a hand full of peanuts.
Plan your meals carefully and stick to the plan. What you eat is the most important ingredient in a successful weight gain program.
Weight Gain Tip No 3 – Get Lifting!
As stated above, proper eating is of utmost importance if you want to gain weight, but if you do not complement eating with weightlifting, all that gained weight will be fat – not muscle.
When trying to gain weight, try working out 3-4 times a week. Make sure you are weightlifting correctly! Lift hard and then recover for the next workout. Focus on the big exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bent-over rows, chin-ups, bench press, & military press. These are the exercises that will turn those extra calories into muscle and therefore help you gain weight. You are not going to gain weight by doing lateral raises and step-ups every workout. It’s the multiple-joint lifts that will shock your system and stimulate your body into growth. Gradually add a little amount of weight each time you workout – this will help you strengthen those muscles. If you focus on strength, size will follow. You need to gain muscular strength in order to get bigger. Look around at your local gym – the strongest guys are also the biggest!
Weight Gain Tip No 4 – Get Weighing!
Weigh yourself at the end of a week. You’ll notice you’re gaining more weight after only one week! However, don’t expect miracles. You won’t have put on 10lb!. Remember that when it comes to weight gain, gaining anymore then 1 or 2 pounds a week is unhealthy and means you’re putting on fat instead of muscle. Patience is a virtue! What you want is to see 1 or 2 pound gains at the end of the week. It may not seem like a lot but add it up. You easily gain weight at the rate of 5-8 pounds a month!
Sooner or later you will stop gaining weight and it is now that you should concentrate on eating even more. So, when you stop gaining for at least 2 weeks, start eating an extra 250 calories a day. Every time you see you haven’t gained weight for at least 2 weeks, add an extra 250 calories.
Weight Gain Tip No 5 – Cut out the Bad Fat!
Avoid trans fats like the plaque, and go for the “good fats”. Yes, you want to gain weight, however you don’t want to gain weight that is in fact just fat. So, cut out the cakes, chips and candy. No more visits to McDonalds and steer clear of anything fried. High protein low fat foods like tuna fish (and other seafood), chicken breast, turkey, lean meats, fruits and vegetables etc, are the good clean foods to eat.
Weight Gain Tip No 6 – Get Drinking! (Sorry, water only)
Drink around a half gallon of water a day and even more if you can. Sure, that’s a lot of water, but believe it or not, it’s that water you need for the energy you need to gain weight! Dehydration can lead to all sorts of health problems, including less stamina at the gym.
Weight Gain Tip No 7 – Go to Sleep!
Get lots of sleep. This is one of the easiest yet most neglected weight gain tips. Sleep for a minimum of 8 hours night. You’re body needs it to function properly.
How Much Will I Gain?
Of course as the saying goes “everyone’s body responds in different ways, so it varies”. That said, if you do eat well, lift heavy, and use weight gainers or mass gainers, you can expect to gain about 10-15lbs within 8 weeks.
Supplements?
To gain weight, you do not NEED supplements, but they will help you gain the weight quicker. That’s what they are, supplementation to an already good diet and training program. Think of supplements as the finishing touch.

hi im katie i only weigh 5 and a half stone and im 13 i get bullyed at school cuz of it and alsoget taged on facebok as the skinny one i hate it so much and i feel sad when i look in themirror at my self and think of how skinny i am please help what am i gunna do :(
Don’t feel too bad about it Katie. I understand that it can be difficult dealing with bullying and how that can create a poor self-image but try not to let it get you down too much. You are likely fine the way you are and it is your peers who are at fault. At your age, your body is still going through a lot of changes. If you truly want to gain weight, talk to your doctor and your parents about it before you make any radical changes to your diet. It might also be helpful to talk to your parents or an adult you trust about these issues you are dealing with at school. Trust me, it will help to get their perspective on the matter.
I am 119 lbs a non dairy vegetarian wgo wants to gain weight. my 1 yr old at 18 lbs, my 6 yr old daughter at 30 lbs and my mid 40 husband at 130 lbs can you advise how. how to calculate calories?
God bless thank you.
Katie, a message for you! When I was your age I was really small, I couldn’t get clothes to fit, and nobody believed me when I told them my age. Funny thing is I’m now 34 and I’m still small and now people still don’t believe me when I tell them my age. They keep asking what my secret to keeping so young looking is. So it has worked out well don’t you think. It takes time for us smaller people to fill out and grow so don’t worry, and be glad to think that you won’t be overweight and big like the people that used to make fun of me at school too. Isn’t it better to be called the skinny one than the fat one! You are young at it takes a bit of time to grow, that’s what happened to me. I have now grown into a size 8 and I have managed to stay that size and people and friends are so jealous when I tell them I’m naturally skinny. You will discover that these people that bully you are just that, jealous. Think of yourself as a caterpillar who will soon grow and turn into a butterfly and leave all those bullies behind. Good luck and don’t worry. :)
REPLY TO KATIE – makes me so mad hearing these sort of comments were other children are horrible because of something so stupid. I would advise going to your doctor and having a chat with him. They can give out nutritional drinks to help you put on a bit of weight. But its not the be all and end all, stick to a close group of friends who don’t tease you and stick with them, since i’ve left school all the people who did the teasing are now low life hopeless bums FACT. and the kids who got teased are all now in university or in great jobs – that’s the honest truth. think about that next time you get down. It doesn’t matter what you look like – the thing that matters in your life is your career.
Hope this helps katie! :-) keep your chin up
im 21 and 8 st but 6 ft. ive never used weight gain shakes and i want to use 1 thats full of proteine. any sugestions x
So not true…bullies can succeed and not succeed, and that also goes for who gets teased. FACT…..Just put it this way life isn´t fair and it will never be. And yes appearance does matter, it isn´t everything though, and that also goes for your career.FACT
I consider my honesty to be a virtue, i just don´t like to deceive people.
Anyway´s maybe you will grow out of it, maybe not, until then keep your grades as high as you can, you wan´t to be known for something.
hey,
just wanted to contact you that your site has helped me significantly in losing weight and building lean muscle mass.
many thanks!

Katie, im in a similar position. Im 15 and 7ish stones. I too was incredibly hurt after being tagged as the ‘skinny one’ on a facebook picture. All my life i have had people bitching about how ‘skinny’ i am. I am a normal person with loads of friends but i look around and see many girls who look like me but not 1 of them have had stick like me. I have no clue what im going to do but i hope that you will be happy in whatever you decide to do. Best bet is to go to your GP and get your BMI tested xx
Hello, I’m Linda. after the death of my husband four years ago, i began to let my body and health go. I didn’t realize just how fast the pounds were falling off my body because of a one meal a day diet I had fallen habit to.
Later, i met another man and considered a long term relationship with him. Then, one day in a drug store with my 21 year old daughter, a pharmacist said it was exceptional to see a young girl in college, but still made time to take care of her “GRANDMOTHER.”
At home i took a long look at myself. i didn’t like what i seen and knew the new man would soon think the same thing. If i can replace the size 0 clothes i now wear with the size 6 i used to wear by gaining part of the weight back, i think i could help. Can you also help?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
These weight gaining tips are true! I currently play college football. I never could gain weight until i applied all the tips.

I agree with everything this website has stated. I’m 20 yrs old at 145lbs and I have a very fast metabolism. I have always been light-weight. I have to watch my diet because I can easily get high cholesterol. I used to weigh 119 lbs in high school, and got to 150lbs by the end of high school. I was 152lbs at one point, then I went through bball training and went down to 133lbs in a few weeks. Tke in mind that I play sports, and I have to have a good amount of cardio exercises for my cholesterol. However, to prevent burning too much calories, I do full body workouts twice a week, with 6 meals a day. For every pound I weigh, I try to eat 2g’s of carbs/lb and 1.5g’s of protein/lb. I’m still trying to put 15-25lbs of muscle mass. So far, so good! I just need more sleep and I need to up my calorie intake even more since I’ve been at a steady 145lbs.
i can relate to katie..i am 18 years old, 4’11 in height and weighs 39kgs..i am already on my 3rd year in college but my classmates would tell me “hey!you should be in high school!you’re so small!” sometimes my classmates would carry me as if i am kidnapped because they said i am so light..aside from having a light weight and being small, i have a face that looks younger than an 18 lady should have that’s why i always get bullied..
and i think, this site is the key for my transformation..i will gain weight! they will see! :)
??
Hi, I’m Jaye 22 years old guy. Is masturbation affects weight gaining program? I wonder if it affects because everytime I masturbate I think I lose weight and I appear so thin.
Please reply..
im a 20 year old guy who weighs only 60 kgs an im bout 1.8 m tal. My gf said i would look awsum with a bit of muscle bt the problm is i have tried b4.. I kinda feel like i simply cant gain weight and i cnt afford supplements..
–Katie, I am 12 , 13 in a 2 months and I really know how you feel. I am 5.6 stones and my weight keeps going down and down and down. I also have a really fast metabolism, which doesn’t really help and I eat HEAPS! But still, I can’t seem to gain any weight. Just ignore those kids at school but I know how you feel and it can hurt. I hope you start gaining some weight soon (I hope so too) and you feel better.
For every young person who is having problems with gaining weight, I’m going to recommended not using weight gainers but a supplement high in whey protein isolates, as well as Glutamine and Creatine (your weight gaining amino acids). I’ve been battling my weight for years now, and i have finally conquered both the mental and physical battle that it is.
(Glutamine basically rebuilds muscle faster, Creatine helps your muscles retain water. Don’t overdo your creatine, or you will lack the definition you are looking for.)
Using a gainer when you are young and your metabolism is so strong, seems to keep it going all day long. It seems that although you are building lean muscle mass, you arn’t putting any size on because your body is working all day to burn all those extra calories out.
In stead, drink shake with about 25-30 grams of protein in it right after you are finished breakfast, and right after dinner. With most supplements this is 1 scoop of powder and about a cup and a half of water. You can easily do 2 scoops of most powders in 2-2.5 cups of water. Chug it down, dont give your mind time to realize are full.
for every pound you weigh, eat 1g Protein. For every pound you want to gain, eat AT LEAST 1g more!
Like the OP said, work out. You are small. Don’t be worried about pushing heavy weight. Get the technique down, and then start upping your weight. Sweat the whole time you work out; you want to be hitting a rep range that makes you sweat. You have little muscle development, and until you do, you need to be building it up with high reps. 12-15 reps to start your blood pumping, then move up to higher weight.
I started getting serious about gaining weight in high school, but battled to figure out how it is to gain healthy weight.
John: Good work bro! Keep it up! I started in high school about 140lbs.
I hope to be 200lbs next week. I look and feel great, and every time i see old friends they are simply amazed.
Do this for YOU, not to impress people. And it will make you happy, confident, and successful. You are the only person holding you back, and by defeating your mental roadblocks; you are going to learn to challenge yourself, and set and accomplish your goals. Rise to the challenge, and you will spend the rest of your life without fear, walking over whatever obstacles may seek to impede your progress. By the time everyone else notices how much better you look and carry yourself; it won’t matter what they think.
my name is tomera and im 12 years old aand 83 lbs i cant turn around without someone calling me skinny im the only one that get the skinny jokes cracked on im getting really mad anything i do its never enough every time someone gets madd at me they just call me skinny and thts the only ting they have on me but its embarassing beacause everyone heres and they laugh at me and im just tired of it someone helllppp!!!!
I read a post from Ayesha… For you: (Weight Gain)
#1 if you want to gain good weight (not a lot of fat so you want more muscle) you have to work out. now you don’t have to go to the gym to work out because any kind of hard exercise that puts stain (its hard for you to do) on your muscles is good. Push ups, Sit ups, Pull ups, Running, Squats, stretches and just what ever you like and anything that makes you kinda sweat. try doing Pull ups and push ups with squats (sit ups). be careful not to injure your self, keep back straight like your siting on a chair for sit ups so you don’t stress your joint/ back if your not too use to it (you get the idea)
#2 be consistent: work out on regular basis and sleep good hours (8 doctor recommended)
#3 Eat as many times as you can a day (6-8 times a day) eat in between meals (have a salad, apple, banana before breakfast wait hour or two and have good breakfast, then two-3 hours before lunch have lassie (yogurt smoothies with fruits). eat a mixed nuts (almonds, cashews, figs and peanuts). Drink milk on regular basis that gives you good calcium and fats that help you grow. eat more nutrition every day vegetables tomatoes, cucumbers, raisins, bananas, plums, etc (fruits have good crabs that you need so that you don’t lose too much weight through out the day so keep eating every now and then) Eat fish its really good for the brain and helps with the good fat intake has a good amount of protein too.
so till now you have your crabs and your protein and your good fats with good nutrition daily .. were on the right track since we want more nutritious stuff in our diet to gain that healthy weight.
now why you lose weight is another story ( not a doctor:) ) but i guess it has to do with how many calories and carbohydrates you lose every day. Eat more calories (warning only good calories not junk food calories they have other bad fats etc that makes your skin look bad etc) and more carbohydrates. Fruits are high in good carbohydrates and the fish, chicken nuts would give you your good calories with protein.
and i guess pretty young (just a guess) so as you get older your body’s metabolism (its ability to burn the food you eat) will slow down (not a good thing when you get old) and it will be easier to gain weight.
Foods you should concentrate on : Eggs, Fish, Chicken, Dairy, Milk, Yogurt, Cheese (high in bad fats too), mixed nuts and dried fruits (might cause pimples for some ppl eat in moderation), Potatoes (bakes or stir fried), Beans, Vegetables (all) Olive Oil and Olives, Pasta and rice will help too .. don’t stress too much and play along with family when they make fun of you and as you gain weight and see you don’t really get bothered by them teasing you
Good luck
PakiMokoJinn
hey my name is Utkarsh. A boy of indian origin i read this article 2 or say 3 months back…oh my god its really works.
i gained 12 pounds in just two and a half months.
One thing i want to bring into the light is that we need to be consistent on the chart we are doing till entire tenure.this is the key to success.I never go for non- veg food.I was on Veg food completely.
Before implement of the procedure i was just 58 kgs. now i touched around 65 Kgs. I am feeling more energy inside every time now.
Thanks really thanks alot :)
I’m about 5’9 150 pounds. To help me gain weight i take creatine, it helps with strength, power and stamina and energy and i take protein . I workout about 6 times a week on different muscle groups.

I’m 17, about 5″2 and weigh between 35-40 kgs.I managed to be over 40kg during the middle of 2010 but somehow managed to end up losing so much weight ):
I have THE fastest metabolism and eat so much, everyone is always telling me I’m too small ad skinny and it isn’t fair because if I could choose I wouldn’t want to be this skinny! It makes me sick hearing it,and being told to eat more.
I eat so much and my ribs aren’t visibly sticking out,I just want more fat in my arms and legs ):
I was only 3stone at the age of 11. and im only 6.9stone now and im 30now. But i understand eveything that katy who only weighs 5. I totally understand. At school i was always teesed,i got called skinny all the time expeccally by the boyz,my nickname was ‘bones’. I hated it:( Anyway you are only young and i know it’s hard, but beleive me katy you will fill out. I school is full of boyz you may like, but if they make fun of you there simply not worth it. You need to get a nice hair cut short is better for thinner girls,no high shoes as taller makes you look thinner, and put a bit of mascara on,make ya self look a bit brighter in the face. And most of all walk with your head high because you are buitiful,as long as you beleive that then others will follow. And remember give it time, you’ll sooner fill out. And you’ve ot one thing going for you,as you get older, you can eat and eat,and not have to worry about putting loads of weight on. Stay Happyxxxxxxx
I’m 24/female, 5’10″, and weigh only between 120-130 lbs. I’ve been sick over the last year and a half between stomach problems (constipation) and being epileptic. I used to weigh 150 lbs a year and a half ago and was finally at a healthy weight. In high school I was a lot bigger (190 lbs and miserable) and since losing the weight I’ve had a hard time keeping it on :( I get a lot of comments from my family like “Skinny mini” and “You’re too skinny, eat something”. I get comments from other people too like “I’m jealous, I wish I could be as thin as you”. They don’t understand that my weight loss is not by choice, that it’s an illness. It doesn’t help either that my epilepsy medication causes weight loss and my hair to fall out. I hate it. The constipation doesn’t help my appetite. I eat as much as I can but I’m not gaining! Help! :( I don’t like being this thin and having my pants fall down!
Another tip, is to avoid smoking. It has been shown smokers have a harder time gaining weight than non smokers.
I’m a non-smoker :)
I’m 16 year old guy i’m about 5 foot 8 and weigh about 103 lbs? is there anything else that you could say to allow me to gain weight i haven’t worn t shirts since my arms are like toothpicks and the same is for shorts. i used to play basketball but i do play drums and use that as my cardio other then that i’m not quite sure what to do or what to eat i just wanted someone elses input thank you :D
Austin, I know how you feel! You came to a good place for information on gaining weight. This isn’t going to be an overnight process. But the best advice anyone could give you; is to get I the gym, and start lifting. Eat, lift, and drink a lot of water. I wish there was just some pill you could take and it would put on weight, but there isn’t anything that can safely do that for you. I’ve reached all my weight goals, but it has taken months of hard and dedicated work. Anyone can reach me at H65192049@gmail.com if they have any personal questions, workout tips or training questions…ect. I’m more than happy to help if I can!
I’m 14 years old and I’ve tried and tried to gain weight so many times. It’s so hard, because I eat all the time but all I do is lose weight. I’m 5’4 and I weigh 90 pounds. Just recently I weighed in the 80′s ! I have an extremely high metabolism. I get made fun of for it every day and get called anorexic. It really hurts my feelings because it’s not even my fault that I’m thin. ):
I’m 25 yrs old, 1.5 meters tall & weigh 40Kg. I eat like a horse everyday. Even when I indulge on unhealthy foods like chips, chocolate, pizzas & burgers; I just cant seem to get past 43Kg-if ever I do gain anything. When I started going to gym so I can gain some muscle I lost about 3Kg in 1 week (after just a few workouts). So I stopped. I went for a medical check-up & the doctor said everything is fine with me, so I really dont know what could be happening.
I dont know what to do anymore. Please help.
i am replying to katie.. i used to be bullied untill i moved schools and found an amazind set of friends, and trust me honey its true bullies hardly ever succeed becausethere to busy being mean to other people to focus on themselves, and usually bullies just do what they do (bully) because there actually afraid of being bullied themselves. so always remember ur the stronger person. think would u rather be FAT or skinny and glowing and beautiful like you are. i am very skinny but i just learned to laugh and the bullys and say yea thats damn straight im skinny and lovin it. so just try that darl. hope it helped and be sure to ask me anything you want and ill give you the best advice that i can. same with all the other people out there. thanks , good lucky sweetie. :)
hi im 13 and weigh about 93 pounds. i used to be around 100-105 but in the last few months went down to 90. my mom flipped and now i go to and eating disorder center with a nutritionist and everything. it sucks because they want me to get back to where i was but i have a hard time always eating. plus my mom is always watching me. i really really want to get taller. my dilemma is that i dont want to lose my body (im comfortable with it and how i look in bikini). so how can i get taller and gain weight but not lose my figure?
This is in response to Katie: I, too, was very skinny when I was around your age and would get picked on in school…even by teachers! It was very embarrassing and I always felt uncomfortable being so skinny and having such knobby knees! I felt like the other girls reached puberty before I did and had already developed, while I was left behind. I would tell you to not worry about it or about what the other kids say. You are still VERY young and your body is still developing and growing. Whenever you hear other people commenting or writing mean things, don’t waste your time listening or feeding into what they say.
Keep eating healthy and focusing on school and just having fun w/friends and family. Trust me dear, your body will eventually catch up. It’s just a matter of time. I look back now and see pictures on facebook of people that I went to school with and let me tell you that a big percentage of them are either overweight or don’t look half as good as they used to! They see my pictures and are in absolute awe of how I turned out and how my body developed. I’m pretty sure most of them wished deep down that they could look like that! I’m 5’3″ and weigh only 108 lbs, but I don’t look unhealthy or sick by any means. I actually do have some curves and look really fit and don’t even have to exercise!
So what I’m trying to say is that don’t let the pressure get to you hun. Most of them are probably just jealous and when you see them a few yrs down the road, after your done with school or something, you’ll see that it was probably a blessing in disguise being skinny at your age! Really. Don’t obsess about gaining weight. It’ll be even harder to put off the weight once you get older! You should feel blessed that you inherited the ‘skinny gene’…keep your head up!:)
Hi my name is Sammi and I am 12 years old. I have been looking every where on the internet to find a diet that will actually work for gaining weight and this one looks legit:) it’s nice to finally see girls my age that are struggling in school with this issue. I weigh 80 lbs and am closest to the smallest girl in my grade. There is not one day literally that goes by where nobody makes a remark about my weight. I am finally done with this and ready to comit to a full, healthy, weight gaining diet! Let’s hear it for the skinny girls! WOO!
I always bopped up and down from 10 to 10.5 stones. I started eating more but had to find what was good for my body. I never used to eat alot of fresh salad or implement fruit into my diet. I used to take supplements but without eating what I eat now.
I was prescribed Ranitadine which is to help with ulcers and heart burn. I found out that apples are good for your digestive system and found that they enabled my diet to become better…I started eating loads of salad and I was told that my skin looked healthier. Some even mentioned that I looked amanciated but now I am looking like how I used to…plus looking younger.
I am more confident in myself and less self conscious. So now I stick to the diet as best as I can and exercise (not too heavy) I drink supermalts everyday and have also implemented nuts into my diet. I watch my calorie intake and try to get in between 2300 and 2600 calories per day.
I am not big but I am starting to fill out and have noticed my face getting rounder. It definitely has an affect on me and those that I interact with. Unfortunately, if you are too fat or too thin you get picked on fact of life. I know that I do it myself…Skinny is so unattractive to look at unless it is a genetic thing. But being bigger is something that I like. I would like to be between 12.5 and 13 stones. I am seeing some progress where as before nothing worked. Once I see some progress I can work to reach my goal. Discipline, determination and Faith are the key elements (not in that order) I hope this has been some help!
